These car window sun shades are a set of four magnetic mesh curtains - two shaped for front side windows and two for rear - in a black honeycomb flame-retardant fabric. Before you read any further, check one thing: the magnets need an iron window frame. The supplier states this explicitly and it is the single fact that determines whether these work on your car, so it belongs at the top rather than buried in a footnote. If your door frames are aluminium - common on many newer and lighter-bodied cars - the magnets will not hold and no amount of positioning will fix it. Test with any fridge magnet against the painted frame around the window before you order.
Assuming they fit, the case for them is straightforward. A parked car in an Australian summer becomes dangerously hot, and rear-seat passengers - usually children - cop direct sun on one side for the whole trip. Will These Fit My Car?
Two questions decide it, and the supplier answers only one. The first is the magnet question above - iron frames yes, aluminium no, and a fridge magnet tells you in two seconds. The second is size, and here we have a gap: the supplier's specification says only "Product size: as the picture", with no measurements at all. That is not good enough on a fitted product and we are not going to invent numbers. We have asked them for the dimensions of each of the four pieces and will publish them here as soon as we have them in writing. If you drive something unusually large or small - a ute, a van, a compact hatch - message us before ordering.
Do Mesh Sun Shades Actually Reduce Heat?
They reduce direct radiant heat on the people and surfaces behind them, which is what matters most on a trip - a child in a rear seat with sun on them is uncomfortable within minutes, and a shade fixes that immediately. What mesh shades do not do is meaningfully lower the whole cabin temperature of a car parked in the sun; heat comes overwhelmingly through the windscreen, which is why windscreen shades exist as a separate product. Treat these as glare and direct-sun control for passengers rather than as air conditioning. We are also not quoting a UV figure: the supplier claims UV protection but supplies no UPF rating or test standard, so there is no number we can honestly give you.
Are Window Shades Legal on Australian Roads?
This is worth understanding before you fit the front pair. Every Australian state and territory regulates what can obstruct a driver's view through the front side windows, and the rules are stricter there than for rear windows. Rear side window shades are generally accepted, and are commonly sold for exactly this purpose. Front side windows are the ones to be careful with - anything that materially obstructs the driver's view can attract a defect notice, and requirements differ between states.
The practical approach most people take is to use all four while parked and when passengers need shade, and to remove the front pair before driving. Because these are magnetic, that takes seconds. We are not in a position to advise on the law in your state - check your own road authority's rules on window obstruction if you intend to drive with the front shades fitted.
