Description

These are three sliding wrapping paper cutters in green plastic - you clip one onto the roll and slide it along, and it cuts a straight line in one pass instead of a jagged scissor edge - $13.99 for the set of three. The blade sits inside the body rather than exposed.

Cutting wrapping paper with scissors is a two handed job on a roll that will not stay flat, which is why the result is almost always crooked and why the crooked edge always ends up on the visible side of the parcel. A sliding cutter turns it into a one handed job: the tool follows the roll, the roll stays where it is, and the cut is straight because the blade tracks in a line rather than following your wrist. Three in a pack because they get lost between Decembers.

Why Choose a Sliding Cutter

  • One hand instead of two - the roll stays put while the cutter does the travelling.
  • A straight edge every time - the blade tracks in a line rather than following your wrist.
  • The blade stays enclosed - it sits inside the body rather than being an exposed edge in a drawer.
  • Fits any roll - it is not sized to one diameter of paper.
  • Three in the pack - one for the wrapping box, one for the office, one for the one you will lose.

How Do You Use One?

Lay the roll flat with the loose end unrolled to roughly the length you need. Clip the cutter over the edge of the paper at one side, then slide it straight across to the other side in a single continuous movement. Do not saw at it or stop halfway - a single pass gives a clean line and a stop-start gives you a stepped edge. Keep the paper reasonably taut with your other hand. It takes one go to get the feel of it and then it is faster than scissors every time.

Will It Cut Anything Other Than Wrapping Paper?

It is designed for standard gift wrap and works well on it. Thin craft paper, tissue and butcher's paper generally cut fine too. What it struggles with is anything thick or laminated - heavy kraft, foil-backed and glitter wrap, corrugated card and any paper with a plastic film will either resist the blade or tear rather than cut. If you mostly use thick or foil paper, a guillotine or a rotary trimmer is a better tool. This is for the ordinary rolls most people buy.

Do the Blades Wear Out?

Eventually, like any blade. There is no replaceable cartridge on this design, so when a cutter stops giving a clean edge it is finished - which is part of why they come in threes. You will notice it as tearing rather than cutting, or as needing to press harder. Keeping them dry and out of a drawer full of other metal objects will extend their life. Do not attempt to open one up to sharpen the blade.

Buyers are people who wrap a lot at Christmas, gift shops and market stallholders, anyone running an online store who wraps orders, and people who simply cannot cut a straight line with scissors and have stopped pretending otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cutters do I get?
Three. Please note the manufacturer's listing has no package contents section at all - the quantity comes from the product title, which states 3.

What size are they?
The manufacturer does not publish dimensions. Contact us before ordering if the size matters and we will measure one.

Is the blade replaceable?
No. There is no replaceable cartridge on this design.

What colour are they?
