How Deep Should a Shepherd Hook Go Into the Ground?

As deep as it will go, which on these is the full length of the straight lower section. The rule of thumb for any ground stake is roughly a quarter of its height buried, so on a 120cm hook you want around 25 to 30cm in the soil. Push it in vertically with steady weight rather than hammering it - a hammer on the curved top will deform the hook. In hard or clay soil, water the spot first and let it soften for an hour; in very sandy soil you may need to go deeper or use a second hook as a brace. If the ground is too hard, make a pilot hole with a metal spike first rather than forcing the hook.

Will It Hold a Full Bird Feeder in Wind?

A heavy nectar feeder swinging in a gust puts far more leverage on the top of the hook than its static weight suggests.
