Is 42 Metres Too Much for an Average Yard?
Rarely. The mistake people make with string lights is buying short and ending up with a thin, mean-looking run they then supplement with a second mismatched set. Excess length is easy to absorb - double back along a fence rail for a denser look, wrap an extra loop up a post, or carry the run further than you first planned. Coming up short is the problem that cannot be fixed without buying again.
How Do You Run String Lights Along a Fence?
Fix at intervals rather than pulling taut between two ends. Cable ties through the fence mesh, small cup hooks screwed into timber posts, or adhesive outdoor clips on a rendered wall all work. Support every metre or so and allow a slight sag between fixings - a gentle catenary looks intentional, while a dead straight wire looks industrial and puts strain on the string. Keep the run above splash height, and site the panel at the sunny end.
Do Longer Strings Dim Toward the End?
Slightly, and it is more noticeable on longer runs than short ones. This is voltage drop - the LEDs furthest from the panel receive marginally less than those nearest it. On a well-charged 42 metre string the difference is subtle and most people never notice, but after a poor charging day the far end fades first. Putting the panel in genuinely good sun is the single biggest thing you can do about it.
