What Does a Support Ramp Actually Do?
Two things. It ramps the floor up to the bottom bar so feet ride over rather than into it, and it braces the bar itself, which reduces the flex that lets a determined toddler push the bottom of the gate outward. The second effect is easy to overlook but it is why these are called support ramps rather than trip covers.
Is the Ramp a Trip Hazard Itself?
A properly fitted ramp is considerably less of one than the bare bar, because it converts a vertical edge into a slope. It is not invisible though - there is still something underfoot in the doorway, and anyone unfamiliar with the house should be told. If the ramp works loose or sits proud on one side it becomes worse than no ramp at all, so check it sits flat whenever you check the gate's tension.
Black or White - Does It Matter?
Only visually, and the choice is usually about matching your gate rather than your floor. Black is the more practical of the two in a high-traffic doorway because scuffs and dirt from shoes show far less.
