What Do the Brush Numbers 3 to 000 Mean?
They are head sizes, and they run backwards from what people expect. Bigger number equals bigger brush, so 3 is the largest in this set. Below size 0 the numbering goes to 00, 000 and so on - each additional zero is smaller again, so 000 is the finest brush here. In practice you will use size 1 and 2 for most work, drop to 0 and 00 for edges and small features, and keep 000 for the genuinely tiny things like a miniature's eyes or a signature.
Are Nylon Brushes Right for Acrylics?
Yes - nylon and other synthetics are the standard choice for acrylic, because acrylic is hard on natural hair and synthetics have the springiness to move a heavier-bodied paint. They also work well for watercolour, though a natural sable holds more water. For oils they are perfectly serviceable. The one thing to avoid is leaving acrylic to dry in the head; once cured, acrylic is effectively permanent and no amount of soaking brings the brush back.
How Do You Stop Detail Brushes Splaying?
Three habits do almost all of it. Never let paint dry in the ferrule - the metal band - because dried paint there forces the hairs apart from the base and the brush is finished. Rinse in warm, not hot, water; hot water softens the glue holding the head. And never stand a brush head-down in a water jar, which is the single most common way a good brush gets bent permanently. Reshape the head with your fingers after washing and store the brushes flat or upright on the handle end.
