The finish is where most first coaster attempts go wrong. A mould with a matte or textured interior transfers that texture to your casting, and getting it back to glass-clear afterwards means wet sanding through several grits and then polishing - hours of work per coaster. A mirror-smooth mould skips all of it. What comes out is what you keep.

Do You Need to Polish Resin After Demoulding?
Not the faces that touched the mould - they come out with the mould's own finish, which here is smooth and glossy. The one part that does need attention is the top, which was open to the air while curing. That surface can have a slight lip or dust settled in it. Most people either level it with a thin flood coat of fresh resin, or wet sand just that face and polish it. Trimming a small flash line around the rim with a craft knife is also normal.
Which Coaster Shape Should You Choose?
Hexagon at 11.5cm is the largest and the most contemporary, and hexagons tessellate, so a set of six sits together as a slab on a table. Square at 10cm gives the most usable surface for a wide-based glass and is the easiest to photograph flat for selling. Round at 8cm is the smallest and cheapest to fill, which matters because resin is the expensive part - it is the sensible one to learn on before committing resin to a bigger pour.
How Many Times Can a Silicone Mould Be Reused?
Dozens of castings if you look after it, and the thing that kills a mould is not use but heat and abrasion. Never demould early - pulling a soft casting stresses the silicone. Do not use solvents or alcohol to clean it; peel off cured residue instead, or press sticky tape onto the surface to lift dust. Store it flat, not folded, and out of sunlight. A mould treated this way stays glossy for a long time; one that has been scrubbed or cut in will start transferring scratches to every casting.
