Raw wick on a roll sounds cheaper until you have cut, primed and crimped forty of them by hand for one batch of candles. What Does a Pre Waxed Wick Actually Do?
Priming means the cotton has already been soaked in wax and dried. That matters for two reasons. A bare cotton wick has air in the fibre, so when you light it the flame burns the fibre rather than drawing fuel, and it tends to go out or smoke. Primed wick has fuel in it immediately, so it establishes a flame straight away and burns cleanly. The second reason is structural - a waxed wick is stiff, so it stands up in the jar while you pour instead of flopping over and setting crooked.
Which Wick Length Suits Which Jar?
Pick a length a bit taller than your container so there is something to hold while pouring, then trim. The 15cm suits most standard candle jars, tins and small votives. The 20cm suits taller jars, apothecary vessels and anything you want to pour in stages. Trim the finished wick to about 5mm above the wax before each burn - long wicks are the main cause of soot and a wandering flame.
Do These Wicks Work With Soy Wax?
Yes, along with gel and paraffin. The important thing to say plainly is that wick size matters more than wick type: too thin and the candle tunnels down the middle leaving a wall of unmelted wax, too thick and it smokes and mushrooms. A 2mm wick suits small to medium containers. For a wide vessel you may need two or three wicks spaced across it rather than one bigger wick. Every wax and fragrance combination behaves differently, so test-burn one candle before making a batch of fifty.
