How Do Glow Straws Work?
Inside the straw is a sealed tube holding two chemicals separated by a thin glass vial. Bending the straw breaks the vial, the two chemicals mix, and the reaction produces light. Shaking mixes them fully and gives the brightest result. It is a one way reaction - once activated, a glow straw cannot be switched off or reset, and it will fade whether or not anybody is using it. Activate them as guests arrive rather than the afternoon before.
Are Glow Straws Safe to Drink Through?
The glow stick is sealed in its own tube separate from the drinking channel, so in normal use nothing enters the drink. That said, treat them the way you would any single use novelty. Do not use one that has been bitten, cracked, crushed or split; discard it. Do not let anyone chew them. The glow liquid is an irritant - if a straw does leak and the contents touch skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water, and seek medical advice if any irritation continues. Supervise children whenever glow products are being used.
