This weather seal strip is a self-adhesive PVC barrier for the base of doors and windows, supplied as two 2 metre lengths for $39.01. Each strip is 4.3cm wide with a 135 degree beveled edge and a drainage channel, and it cuts to length with scissors - no drilling and no fixings.
The problem this solves is specific and very Australian: driving rain that does not fall on a window but is pushed horizontally into the track underneath it. Once water sits in a sliding door channel it has nowhere to go, so it wicks inward across the sill and onto the floor - which is why the puddle usually appears after wind rather than after the heaviest rain. How Do You Get Self Adhesive Strip to Actually Stay Stuck?
Surface preparation decides this, not the adhesive. Clean the frame with methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol rather than a household spray - most kitchen and bathroom cleaners leave a silicone or wax residue that adhesive will not grip, and that residue is the usual reason a strip lifts a fortnight later. Let it dry completely, then apply firm pressure along the whole length, not just at the ends. Temperature matters too: adhesive tapes bond poorly below about 10 degrees, so if you are fitting this on a cold Melbourne or Canberra morning, warm the frame first or wait for the afternoon. Leave it 24 hours before the first rain if you can.
Where Should the Strip Sit on the Frame?
On the outside face, at the bottom, with the beveled edge pointing down and away from the building - so water runs off the slope rather than into the join. The common mistake is fitting it inside, where it becomes a dam holding water against the sill instead of a deflector shedding it away. On a sliding door, check the runner clears the strip before you commit to the whole length: stick 20cm down first, slide the door, and confirm nothing catches. On a casement window, make sure the sash still closes fully onto its seal with the strip in place.
Will This Stop Draughts as Well as Rain?
Partly, and it is worth being clear about which job it does well. Its design purpose is water - the bevel and channel are about drainage, not about sealing an air gap. It will cut the wind that comes straight under a door, and in doing so it usually makes a noticeable difference to a draughty room. But it is not a brush seal or a compression door snake, and if your problem is purely cold air rather than water coming in, a dedicated draught excluder will do more for less. Many people end up using both: this on the outside for the rain, a brush seal on the inside for the air.
