Is USB 5V or 12V?
USB is 5V. This is the point that trips people up, and it is worth being clear about: a 12V USB socket is not passing 12V to your phone. The socket contains a converter that steps the vehicle's 12V DC supply down to the 5V that the USB standard requires, and 5V is what appears at the ports. That is exactly why you cannot simply solder a USB port onto a 12V wire — doing so would put more than double the rated voltage into whatever you plug in. The socket does the conversion for you, which is the whole reason it exists.
How Do You Wire a 12V USB Socket?
The connection itself is straightforward: two wires, positive to a fused 12V supply and negative to earth. Cut or drill the panel to suit the socket body, feed it through from the front, and secure it from behind. From there you have two sensible choices about where the positive feed comes from. Running it from a switched circuit means the socket is only live when the ignition or the caravan's accessory switch is on, so it cannot flatten the battery while the vehicle is parked. Running it from a permanent feed means you can charge with everything else off, which is what most caravan and camper owners want, but the circuit must be fused at the battery end.
Keep the run as short as practical, protect the cable where it passes through metal with a grommet, and secure it clear of anything hot or moving. Permanent 12V wiring in a vehicle or caravan is work worth doing properly — if you are not confident, or the installation is in a registered caravan, have a licensed auto electrician do or check the job.
What Size Fuse Does a 12V USB Socket Need?
Start from the actual load. At full output the socket delivers 3.1A at 5V, which is roughly 15W, and after conversion losses that draws somewhere under 2A from the 12V side. It is a light accessory circuit, not a heavy one. The important principle is that the fuse protects the cable, not the socket — its job is to blow before the wire can overheat. So choose the cable first, sized for the current and for the length of the run (on longer runs, voltage drop rather than heat is usually what drives you to thicker cable), then fit the smallest fuse that comfortably carries the load without nuisance-blowing. If the socket is joining an existing fused accessory circuit, check that circuit has headroom before adding to it. If any of this is unclear for your particular vehicle, an auto electrician will size it correctly in a few minutes.
