Description

The Motion Sensor Light is a 6 LED wireless night light from $12.99 that switches itself on when it detects movement in the dark, then switches off again about 15 seconds later. It sticks to any surface with adhesive tape or its built-in magnet - no wiring, no drilling, no electrician.

The hallway at 2am is where most households discover the problem. Flicking on the main light wakes everyone in the house; walking in the dark ends with a stubbed toe or a missed step on the stairs. Hard-wiring a sensor light means booking a sparky, waiting for a quote and cutting a hole in the wall. This is the cheap fix instead: three AAA batteries, stick it where the problem is, and it only draws power when something actually moves past it.

Why This Motion Sensor Light Earns Its Place

  • Two-way mounting - adhesive pad for plaster and timber, built-in magnet for anything steel
  • Dark-only trigger - it ignores daytime movement, so batteries are not wasted lighting a bright room
  • Damage-free - no screws and no drilling means renters can use it and take it with them
  • Two light tones - cool white for cupboards and garages, warm white for bedrooms and hallways
  • Buy the pack you need - one for a single problem spot, six to do the whole house at once

Will a Motion Sensor Light Work Without Wiring?

Yes. This one is entirely self-contained. Three AAA batteries sit inside the housing, and the whole unit weighs little enough that a 3M adhesive pad holds it on painted plaster, tiles, timber or laminate. If the surface happens to be steel - the side of a fridge, a metal shelf bracket, a garage stud - the magnet in the back grips it directly and you can reposition it as often as you like. To change the batteries you twist the cover off; nothing needs unmounting.

How Long Does the Light Stay On?

About 15 seconds from the last movement it detects. That is deliberately short. A sensor light that stays on for two minutes drains a set of AAA batteries in weeks, while 15 seconds is long enough to cross a hallway, find a step or reach into a cupboard. If you are still moving when the timer runs down, the sensor picks that up and restarts the count, so it will not cut out on you mid-task.

Where Do These Lights Actually Help Most?

The spots with no power point and no switch within reach. Inside a wardrobe or linen press. Under kitchen cabinets where the benchtop sits in shadow. On the wall beside a bed for night feeds. Along a hallway or down a staircase. In a shed, caravan or garage where the main switch is at the wrong end. Behind a door in a rental where drilling is not an option. Each one costs $12.99 and takes about a minute to fit, which is why the three and six packs sell more often than the single.

Households with small children or elderly parents tend to buy the six pack and treat it as a safety measure rather than a lighting upgrade - a lit path to the bathroom at night prevents a lot of falls. Renters, caravanners and anyone fitting out a shed buy them because there is no wiring involved and nothing to make good when they leave.

Pair it with the rest of our Home & Garden range, or browse Essentials for the practical bits every house runs out of. If the light is going into a child's room, the Children collection has softer options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it come with batteries?
No. Each light needs 3 x AAA batteries, which are not included. Alkaline batteries last considerably longer than the cheap zinc ones.

Will it turn on during the day?
No. There is a light sensor as well as a motion sensor, and the LEDs only fire when the surrounding area is already dark.

Can I choose warm white and cool white in the same pack?
Each pack is a single colour temperature. If you want both, order one pack of each.

How far away does it detect movement?
Up to about 3 metres, and it works best when movement crosses in front of the sensor rather than walking straight at it.

Will the adhesive pull paint off?
The pad is strong. On freshly painted or flaking surfaces, test in a hidden spot first, or mount it on something metal and use the magnet instead.

Is it bright enough to read by?
No. At 0.3W it is a guide light - enough to see where you are going and find what you are reaching for, not a room light.

Can I use it outside?
It is not weather sealed, so keep it under cover. A carport, verandah ceiling or enclosed porch is fine; open weather is not.
