Description

This Soldering Iron Kit is a 60W adjustable-temperature iron with 14 accessories for $31.99. The temperature sets anywhere from 200C to 450C and holds there, the ceramic element brings it up to heat in about ten seconds, and it comes with five tips, a desoldering pump, a stand and a PU carry bag.

The reason to buy a kit rather than a bare iron is that soldering needs three things beyond the iron itself: a safe place to put it down, a way to remove solder when you get it wrong, and something to hold the work. All three are here, which is why this suits someone starting out rather than someone adding to an existing bench.

Why This Suits a First Iron

  • Adjustable, not fixed - fine electronics and heavier joints need different temperatures
  • Five tips - a chisel for wire and a fine conical for boards, from one iron
  • Desoldering pump included - beginners need to undo joints more than experts do
  • Stand included - a hot iron on a bench is how tools and fingers get ruined
  • Carry bag - keeps the small parts together instead of scattered in a drawer

What Temperature Should You Solder At?

For general electronics with standard leaded solder, somewhere around 300 to 350C is the usual working range. Lead-free solder needs more, typically 350 to 400C. Heavier work - thick wire, ground planes, connectors that sink heat away - can want 400C and above. Running hotter than needed is not a shortcut: it oxidises the tip fast, can lift pads off a circuit board, and damages components. Start at the lower end and raise it only if the solder is not flowing.

Why Does the Tip Stop Taking Solder?

Oxidation, and it is the single most common frustration for new solderers. Heat plus air builds an oxide layer on the tip that solder will not wet, so the joint starves. The prevention is tinning: put a little solder on the tip when you switch on, wipe it before each joint, and leave a coat of solder on it when you switch off. Never file or sand a plated tip - that removes the plating and the tip is then finished. If it has gone dull and grey, tip tinner or fresh solder plus a brass wool wipe will usually recover it.

Is 60W Enough for Car Wiring?

For most automotive work, yes. 60W handles single conductors, connectors, spade terminals and trailer plugs without struggling. Where it starts to fall short is heavy gauge cable and anything with a large metal body sinking the heat away - battery lugs and thick earth straps in particular, where the joint pulls heat out faster than a 60W iron replaces it. For those, a higher wattage iron or a proper crimp is the right answer.

Buyers are learning electronics, doing automotive and hobby wiring, repairing appliances and RC gear, and assembling kits.

Our heat shrink tubing kits pair with this. See Tools & Hardware and Automotive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pieces are in the kit?
The iron plus 14 accessories, including 5 tips.

Is solder included?
A tin wire tube is supplied. Quantity is limited - buy solder separately for a real project.

What temperature range?
200C to 450C, adjustable.

Will it work on Australian mains?
It is specified at 220V. Australian mains is 230V nominal, which is within the normal tolerance for 220-240V equipment.

Are the tips replaceable?
Yes, and they are the common 900M series.

Can I leave it switched on between joints?
Try not to. Idling hot shortens tip life. Switch off if you are stopping for more than a few minutes.

Is it suitable for lead-free solder?
Yes, at the upper end of its temperature range.

Fast Australian Shipping

Dispatched from Australia to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and Darwin, with regional and remote addresses served through the standard Australia Post network.

Measurements are approximate. Screen colours vary between devices. BURN HAZARD: the tip reaches 450C. Always use the stand, never leave a hot iron unattended, keep it away from children, and let it cool fully before packing away. Solder in a ventilated area and wash hands afterwards. Never use a mains appliance with a damaged lead or plug.
