Why Is There a Ramp on a Pressure Gate?
Because a pressure gate needs a closed frame to work. Unlike a hardware-mounted gate that screws into the wall on both sides, a pressure gate braces itself between two surfaces, and the bottom bar is the member that stops the frame racking under load. It cannot be left out. The ramp is the manufacturer's answer to the side effect - covering the bar so a necessary piece of engineering is not also a hazard.
Can You Remove It Later?
Yes. The ramp is an accessory that sits over the bar, not part of the gate's structure, so it lifts off when the gate comes down or moves to another doorway. Worth doing when you relocate the gate rather than leaving the ramp behind, since a loose ramp on the floor with no gate above it is genuinely a trip hazard.

On low-pile carpet, yes. On thick or plush carpet, check that the ramp sits flat rather than rocking on the pile - a ramp that tips underfoot is worse than the bare bar.
