Description

This Baby Gate Spindle Adaptor lets a pressure-fit safety gate mount against stair banister spindles instead of a flat wall, priced at $17.99. It is sold as one adaptor.

The problem it exists to solve is specific and very common: pressure gates are designed to push against two flat, parallel, solid surfaces. The top of a staircase almost never offers that. One side is usually a wall, and the other is a banister made of round or shaped spindles that a gate cup simply cannot grip. Without an adaptor, the gate either will not tension properly or it damages the balustrade.

Specifications

Note on dimensions and fit: the supplier has not provided measurements or a compatibility list for this adaptor, so we have not invented either. It is supplied as an accessory to our adjustable safety gate range. If you are fitting a gate from another brand, or your spindles are an unusual shape or spacing, contact us before ordering and we will measure the stock on hand for you.

Why a Banister Needs an Adaptor

  • Gives the gate a flat face to push against - round spindles offer none
  • Spreads the load across several spindles instead of concentrating it on one
  • No drilling - the balustrade is not modified, which matters in a rental
  • Protects the timber from the marking a bare gate cup causes
  • Makes the tension real - a gate that cannot tension properly is not a safety gate

What Is a Spindle Adaptor For?

It converts an uneven banister into a flat mounting surface. The adaptor clamps across the spindles and presents a solid pad that the gate's pressure cup can bear against, so the gate can be tensioned the way it was designed to be. Without one, people typically wedge something in, over-tighten the gate, or fit it crooked - and all three compromise the gate.

Will It Fit Any Banister?

Not automatically, and this is worth checking before you order. Spindle shape, thickness and spacing vary enormously between staircases - round, square, turned, wrought iron, wide-spaced, narrow-spaced. An adaptor designed around common timber spindles may not suit an ornate or metal balustrade. Since we do not hold manufacturer fit data for this part, measure your spindles and contact us first if your staircase is anything other than plain and evenly spaced.

Do You Need One at Both Ends?

Only where there is a spindle. The usual staircase has a wall on one side and a banister on the other, so one adaptor is enough. A landing with balustrades on both sides needs two, ordered separately. If both sides are flat wall you need none at all.

Buyers are fitting a safety gate at the top or bottom of stairs, renters who cannot drill into a balustrade, and grandparents childproofing for visits.

Our adjustable safety gates and their other accessories - wall bumpers and support ramps - are in Children and Home & Garden. See also Kid's Supplies.

Screen colours vary between devices. SAFETY: a stair gate is only as safe as its installation. Follow the gate manufacturer's instructions, check the tension regularly, and never rely on a gate as a substitute for supervision. Pressure-mounted gates are not recommended at the top of stairs by many safety authorities - a hardware-mounted gate is the safer choice there.
