How Does an Automatic Stripper Know the Gauge?
It does not measure anything. The jaws are sprung so they close onto the wire until they meet resistance from the conductor, then a second set of jaws grips further along and pulls. The conductor stops the blades before they reach it. That is why the adjustment screw matters: too much force and very thin insulation gets over-gripped, too little and thick insulation is not fully severed. Set it once for the wire you use most and adjust when you change to something very different.
What Is AWG and How Does It Map to Millimetres?
American Wire Gauge runs backwards - a bigger number is a thinner wire. 24 AWG is fine signal wire around 0.5mm across; 10 AWG is heavy cable around 2.6mm. This tool covers that whole span. Australian cable is usually sold by cross-sectional area in mm squared rather than AWG, and the two do not convert neatly, so if you are working with local cable go by physical fit rather than trying to translate the numbers.
Can It Crimp as Well as Strip?
Yes, with different ranges for the two terminal types: 10 to 22 AWG for insulated terminals and 4 to 22 AWG for non-insulated. A crimp made with a combination tool like this is fine for automotive and low-voltage work. For high-current or critical connections a dedicated ratcheting crimper gives a more consistent result, because it will not release until the crimp is complete. Give any crimp a firm pull test before you insulate it.
