Description

A Halloween backdrop banner is one big printed panel that turns a blank wall, fence or garage door into a finished scene in about five minutes. This one is 180 x 400cm of weatherproof polyester with a spooky print, eight reinforced grommets and ribbon ties, so it hangs indoors or out and comes down without leaving a mark.

The hardest part of decorating for a party is never the small stuff. It is the wall. You can hang bunting, string lights and cobwebs all afternoon and the room still reads as your lounge room with decorations in it, because the background never changed. One four metre panel changes the background, and everything you hang in front of it suddenly looks like it belongs there. It is also the single best thing you can do for the photos, which is what people actually keep from the night.

Why One Big Panel Does More Than a Room Full of Decorations

  • It changes the background, not just the foreground - decorations hung against a plain wall still read as a plain wall. A four metre backdrop is the only thing that resets what people are actually looking at.
  • Every photo gets better at once - phone photos at parties are lit badly and framed worse. A dark printed backdrop hides the mess behind it and makes every shot look composed.
  • Nothing touches the wall - it hangs from grommets, so no tape, no blu-tack marks and no picture hooks in the plaster. Renters, this is the one.
  • Indoors or out - the same panel works on a lounge room wall, across a colorbond fence, over the garage door or on a balcony rail. It is not fussy about which.
  • It packs down to nothing - fold it and it takes less room in the cupboard than a bath towel, so it comes back out every October instead of going in the bin every November.

How Do You Hang a Halloween Backdrop?

Indoors, the neatest method is a length of string or fishing line run between two hooks at ceiling height with the banner tied through its top grommets, so the whole panel hangs flat like a curtain. Tension the line first, then hang the fabric - the other way around and it sags in the middle. Outdoors, tie it through the grommets to a fence rail, a gutter bracket, a pergola post or a couple of outdoor adhesive hooks. Whichever way you go, hang the two top corners first, step back and check it is level, and only then fix the middle and the bottom. Tying the bottom grommets as well as the top is what stops it flapping in any breeze.

Can You Use It as a Photo Backdrop?

That is what it is best at. At 400cm wide it is broad enough to fit a whole group in shot without anyone standing half off the edge, and at 180cm high it covers the frame for standing adults. Two things make the difference between a good backdrop and a great one: get the fabric flat and hang it a step or two behind where people will stand, so the print stays sharp and nobody casts a shadow onto it, and put your light in front of the group rather than behind them. A lamp, a ring light or even a couple of phone torches on the floor pointing up is enough.

Can You Reuse It Next Year?

Yes, and that is the main reason to buy fabric rather than paper. Bring it in dry, give it a shake, fold it loosely and store it out of direct sunlight. Creases from folding drop out on their own once it is hung again, and a low steam or a warm iron on the reverse will speed that up if you are impatient. Stored properly it will outlast several seasons of cardboard cut-outs and stick-on decals.

Where People Hang It

Lounge room and hallway walls for house parties, garage doors and front fences for the street, side gates, pergolas and balcony rails for a back yard set-up, and behind the food table so the photos have something going on. Schools and community halls use them behind stages and across corridors for Halloween discos and fetes, and they move between rooms easily because there is nothing to dismantle. They also do a job well past October - the same panel works for any dark-themed party through the year.

Pair It With

A backdrop wants depth in front of it. 2.5m Giant Stretch Spider Web or the Giant Stretch Cobweb Set pulled across the corners, with a Giant Spider Prop caught in it, is the quickest way to break up a flat surface. The Gothic Black Lace Spider Web Curtains frame a doorway beside it, and the 3pk Hanging Ghost Decorations hung above give the scene movement. For lighting, 50pk EL Glow Wire traced along the top edge lifts the whole panel after dark. Add the 8pc Halloween Foil Balloon Set and 24pc Halloween Latex Balloons either side, and if you want a non-Halloween option later, the Metallic Tinsel Curtain Backdrop uses the same hanging setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is this Halloween banner?
180cm high by 400cm wide - about 6 feet by 13 feet, or 71 by 157 inches. That is wide enough to cover a full wall section or a single garage door with fabric to spare.

How do I hang it without damaging the wall?
Run string or fishing line between two existing hooks and tie the banner through its top grommets, or use outdoor-rated adhesive hooks. The banner is light, so nothing needs to go into the plaster.

Can it go outside?
Yes. The polyester is made for outdoor display and handles sun and rain. Tie all eight grommets rather than just the top two, because wind is what damages banners, not water.

Will it work as a party photo backdrop?
Yes - it is one of the better uses for it. Hang it flat, stand your group a step in front of it, and keep your light source in front of them rather than behind.

Does it come with anything to hang it?
It comes with eight reinforced grommets already fitted and ribbon ties. You will want a length of string, some hooks or a fence rail to tie it to, depending on where you are hanging it.

Will the fold creases show?
They drop out on their own within a few hours of hanging. If you need it perfect straight away, a warm iron or a steamer on the reverse side sorts it out quickly.

Can I use it for something other than Halloween?
The print is Halloween themed, so it suits October, haunted house parties, horror movie nights and anything with a dark theme. For birthdays and weddings, a tinsel or plain fabric backdrop is a better fit.
