Description

This is a 5 litre collapsible water container in food grade BPA free PE, measuring 30 x 32.5cm unfolded and empty, with a large screw cap handle and a hanging buckle - $12.99. Full, it carries five litres; empty, it folds flat into a pocket of a pack.

Rigid jerry cans have one problem: they take up exactly as much space empty as full. On a camping trip, in a car boot, or in a caravan cupboard, that is the difference between taking water and leaving it behind. A collapsible carrier is full when you need it and flat when you do not, which is why they have largely replaced hard containers for anything you carry rather than store. The wide filling mouth is the detail that makes it usable - narrow necks are slow to fill from a tap and impossible to clean.

Why Choose a Collapsible Water Container

  • Flat when empty - it takes almost no space in a pack, boot or caravan cupboard on the way out.
  • Widened filling mouth - fills fast from a tap and can actually be cleaned inside.
  • Hanging buckle - clip it to a pack, a tent pole or an awning rail rather than standing it on the ground.
  • Food grade BPA free PE - the right plastic for drinking water rather than a general purpose one.
  • Rated to 80 degrees C - it handles hot water for washing up, not just cold drinking water.

How Long Can You Store Water in It?

For drinking, treat it as short term. Water stored in any container picks up flavour and can grow bacteria over time, particularly once the container has been opened and handled and especially in warm weather. Fill it fresh for a trip, use it within a few days, and empty and dry it fully afterwards rather than leaving water sitting in it between uses. Emptying it also matters for the container itself - stagnant water in a folded bag is what makes them smell.

How Do You Clean and Store a Collapsible Container?

Rinse it with warm soapy water through the wide mouth, rinse thoroughly, then leave it open and standing upright until it is completely dry inside before folding it away. Folding a damp container is the single fastest way to make it smell, and the smell is very difficult to shift once it sets in. If it does pick up an odour, a solution of bicarbonate soda and warm water left in it overnight usually clears it. Keep it out of direct sunlight when stored.

Can It Be Used for Anything Other Than Water?

The manufacturer describes it as suitable for water and other drinks. In practice it works well for cordial or juice for a day trip, but anything sugary needs washing out promptly and thoroughly or it will ferment and stain. Do not use it for fuel, chemicals, cleaning products or anything not intended for consumption - it is food grade plastic sold for drinking water, and once a container has held a chemical it can never safely go back to holding water.

Buyers are campers, four wheel drivers and caravanners, festival and event goers, people putting together an emergency or blackout kit, and boaties. It also sells to households in areas with water restrictions or unreliable supply, who keep one folded in a cupboard.

For a camping kit, pair it with our rechargeable LED torch and the snowflake multi tool. Browse Camping and Outdoor and Essentials for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is it?
30 x 32.5cm unfolded and empty, holding 5 litres when full.

Can it hold hot water?
It is rated 0 to 80 degrees C. Do not use boiling water, which is 100 degrees.

Does it stand up by itself when full?
The manufacturer does not state that it is free standing. Use the handle or the hanging buckle rather than assuming it will stand unsupported.

Is it BPA free?
Yes - the manufacturer states food grade PE with no BPA.

Can it be frozen?
The stated range starts at 0 degrees C. We would not recommend freezing it, as water expands and can split a seam.

Is there a tap or spout?
No. It has a large screw cap with an integrated handle, not a dispensing tap.

Do you ship Australia wide?
Yes, to every state and territory including regional and remote addresses.

Fast Australian Shipping

We ship from Australia to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and Darwin, plus regional and remote addresses. Orders placed on a business day are picked and dispatched promptly, with tracking emailed to you as soon as the parcel leaves us.

Rated 0 to 80 degrees C - do not use boiling water. For drinking water and beverages only; never use it for fuel, chemicals or cleaning products. Empty and dry fully before storing. Five litres of water weighs about 5kg, so lift with care. Keep filled containers away from unsupervised small children.
