Description

This Contour Gauge is a 12cm (5 inch) ABS profile duplicator priced at $18.99. Press the toothed edge against any irregular shape - a skirting board, a pipe, a door architrave - and the pins hold that profile so you can trace it straight onto the material you are about to cut.

The job it replaces is guesswork with a tape measure and a pencil. Cutting flooring around a doorframe or tiles around a pipe means transferring a shape you cannot easily measure, and most people do it by trial, offcut and repeat. A gauge captures the shape in one press.

Why It Beats Measuring by Hand

  • Copies the shape directly - no reading, transcribing or converting measurements
  • One press - the whole profile at once rather than point by point
  • Fewer wasted offcuts - cut once instead of trimming three times
  • Works on curves - pipes, round frames and mouldings that a rule cannot follow
  • Pocket sized - 12cm, so it lives in the tool bag rather than the van

How Do You Transfer a Profile Accurately?

Press the gauge square onto the shape with steady even pressure, keeping the body parallel to the surface you will cut. Lift it away without knocking the pins, lay it on the material, and trace along the stepped edge with a sharp pencil. Cut slightly outside the line and file back to fit - it is far easier to remove a millimetre than to put one back. If the profile is deeper than the pin travel, take it in two overlapping passes and join the traces.

What Can 12cm Actually Copy?

Door architraves, skirting boards, single pipes, window reveals, stair nosings and most trim profiles. It suits laminate and vinyl flooring, tiling around plumbing, and cutting sheet material to fit against moulded edges. What 12cm will not do in one pass is a wide sweep - a broad curved bench edge or a whole doorframe width needs several overlapping impressions traced end to end, or a longer gauge.

Plastic or Metal Pins?

These are ABS. Plastic pins are lighter, will not scratch a finished surface, and cost far less. The trade-off is that they hold a profile with slightly less friction than steel pins, so an ABS gauge should be carried flat and traced promptly rather than pressed, pocketed and used an hour later. For occasional DIY and trade use on trim and flooring, plastic is entirely adequate; for repeated daily use in a fabrication shop, steel is the upgrade.

Buyers are laying laminate and vinyl flooring, tiling around pipes and fittings, fitting skirting and architraves, and doing woodwork and auto body panel work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is it?
12cm, which is 5 inches.

What is it made of?
ABS plastic.

Will it scratch a finished floor?
Plastic pins are much gentler than steel, but press onto the profile rather than dragging it across a finish.

Can it copy a pipe?
Yes, that is one of the main uses.

Does it lock the profile in place?
The pins hold by friction. Carry it flat and trace promptly rather than leaving it in a pocket.

Can I copy something wider than 12cm?
Take overlapping impressions and join the traces.

Is a pencil included?
No.
