How Long Will It Run on a Cloudy Day?
The 18 to 20 hour figure is the manufacturer's rating from a full 6 to 8 hour charge in good sun, and no solar light matches its rated runtime after a dull winter day. Real world performance depends on your latitude, the season, how much of the day the panel sees direct sun, and how often the motion sensor triggers full brightness. Angle the panel to face north in Australia and keep it clear of overhanging branches and eaves - panel placement affects runtime more than any other single factor. On the low idle setting between triggers, it will stretch much further than on constant full output.
Where Should a Motion Sensor Light Be Mounted?
High enough that it cannot be reached or knocked, but low enough that the sensor covers the path people actually walk. Two to three metres is the usual range. Aim the sensor across an approach rather than straight down it - movement crossing the detection zone triggers more reliably than movement coming directly towards the unit. Keep it away from anything that moves in wind, such as washing lines and long branches, and away from your bedroom window unless you enjoy being woken by possums. Does the Solar Panel Need to Face a Particular Direction?
In Australia, north. The unit is an integrated design with the panel on top, so mounting position and panel angle are the same decision - which means choosing the wall matters. A south facing wall will charge poorly all winter no matter how good the panel is. If the only usable mounting spot faces the wrong way, the 50cm pole lets you lift the unit clear of a fence or eave to catch more sun. Wipe dust off the panel a few times a year; a dirty panel is the most common reason these lights slowly stop performing.
